Rodeo Story
Rolf Glass’s award winning designer Paula Sansone-Johnson has created Rodeo, inspired by an early memory while living in South Dakota.
It was a very hot summer day and I was the youngest of 3 kids and we were getting ready to go to the rodeo.
My sister and I were wearing our matching ruffled white gauze dresses that had been custom-made for us by a Native American that my father knew.
The excitement began with a parade, which was a grand celebration marking the opening ceremony to welcome the rodeo to town.
It was so exciting to see the animals, bands, cowboys and cowgirls, and of course the rodeo clowns. The most vivid memory of that day was watching a big old stage coach moving towards us, complete with a sheriff and his deputy.
As they passed by us one shouted "Let’s get the red head"! In a second his big lasso flew by me and wrapped itself around my mothers waist.
They pulled her out of the crowd and onto the street.
I was in complete shock as I watched her struggle and laugh at the same time. She was pulled behind the stage coach for a few feet until one of the men picked her up over his shoulders and put her into the stage coach.
I started crying, “Give mommy back!” "You can pick her up at the jail at the end of the parade," he replied with a chuckle.
I still cry at parades. I’m not sure if it's because of this event or the sheer joy of watching people gathering together to laugh and have fun.
Thank you, Pomegranate Homes & Garden in Bend, Oregon for naming this line "Rodeo"!
The Rodeo collection features 4 different rodeo icons -- a boot, horse, star, and cow. Mixed set Rodeo icons are also available and deeply sand-etched on our 14oz DOF glass. A matching whiskey decanter with a sheriff’s star completes the set.
