Rolf Glass Announces License Agreement with Old Salem Museums and Gardens
This agreement allows Rolf Glass to utilize a beautiful pattern inspired by the fretwork of a c.1770 Charleston, South Carolina chest‐on‐chest in the collection of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts at Old Salem Museums & Gardens.
Often called “Elfe Fret” after cabinetmaker Thomas Elfe (1719‐1775), this distinctive motif based on the designs of Thomas Chippendale (1719‐1779) found its way in to the shops of many of Charleston’s leading craftsmen on the eve of the American Revolution.
Rolf Glass has interpreted this pattern on cut and polished all‐purpose and balloon crystal glasses. The unique architectural feature has also been engraved on a trifle bowl with matching gray cut fret pattern, making it a perfect addition to any style of home décor.
Varieties of the collection include a Large Wine Glass (19oz), Balloon Wine Glass (19oz), Goblet White Wine Glass (12oz), Footed Ice Tea Glass (16oz), Flute Glass (8oz) and Trifle Bowl.
These elegant Charleston designs are available for purchase now through the shop at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts as well as directly through Rolf Glass.

About Old Salem Museums & Gardens
Old Salem Museums & Gardens is a unique community of original museum buildings, authentic craftsmen practicing their trade, fascinating collections of rare antiques, and one‐of‐a‐kind retail shopping opportunities.
The stories and activities experienced by visitors in the museums convey a much larger aspect of early America than just the Moravians who settled in Salem, NC. The experiences are a reflection of the evolving economy and diversity of lifestyles that made up the early South. Early Southerners struggled with common principles such as freedom, faith, tradition, government, segregation, and war – many of the same issues that remain relevant in today’s world.
